MAGIC DRAGON of Vancouver
FOR SALE IN NEW ZEALAND WITH YEAR AROUND SAFE MOORING IN KERIKERI BAY OF ISLANDS NEW ZEALAND
Magic Dragon was built in 1963 and launched in August 1964 by her present owners. Since she has never before been for sale one could say that she is a new boat that has undergone extensive sea trials by the builders! Indeed she has been lived aboard and sailed far and wide in the North and South Pacific, the Tasman, the Caribbean and the North Atlantic for over forty years.(100,000 miles of ocean passages plus uncounted miles of coastal cruising) With the builder and his mate aboard she has had constant careful maintenance and upgrading and she has not suffered neglect. She is registered in Vancouver Canada and she was imported into New Zealand so she can be legally kept in either country.
Magic Dragon is a sturdy, roomy, comfortable, practical, flush deck cruising yacht. She was not designed to race or to be displayed at boat shows. She is a fast passage maker ideal for long term cruising wherever her crew wants to take her. She is sloop rigged with roller furling/reefing main and genoa. She also has a running masthead forestay to set hanked sails, (180% drifter, two genoas and a storm jib) a couple of spinnakers and self tailing winches. Her 75 hp 220D Isuzu diesel was fully rebuilt in November 2007, it is turning a 22inch (560mm) Hundested feathering variable pitch propeller gives her 6.5knots at 1000rpm for economy cruise, 7.5 knots at 1400rpm and tops at 8knots. With 350 gallon (1400 litre) fuel tankage she has over 2000 miles range under power. With well insulated hull and deck she is suitable for cold or warm climes. She has both an economical diesel heater and a solid fuel stove for cold weather and a big awning and wind scoops plus seven 4 inch (100mm) dorade ventilators and six electric fans to keep her cool.
Magic Dragons big features are her fully enclosed convertible cockpit with good visibility from comfortable forward facing adjustable seats,(cockpit convertible top new June 2009) her spacious salon and practical galley (gas cooker with big oven, 150liter 3 way gas-electric gimballed refrigerator/freezer and full sized double SS sink); her roomy head with shower; her separate fore and aft double cabins and her easy to handle sailing rig and reliable wind vane self steering. She also has enormous stowage including 20 drawers, 95 feet (29 metres) of cupboard shelves, two hanging lockers and a big hold where a motor cycle, diving gear, outboard motor, deck chairs, ropes and fenders are kept. Her sliding companion-way door gives easy access below.
Her hull is GRP 1/4 to 5/8 inch thick (6mm to 16mm) laid up over a 2 inch (50mm) strip planked red cedar mould.
Her deck, laid over deck beams, is a wood and foam insulated laminate 2 inch(50mm) thick covered with 3/16 inch (4mm) GRP
Her keels are heavily fabricated steel with lead ballast and fuel tankage.
Her rudders are fabricated CorTen steel.
Her mast is aluminium and her rigging is 1x19 SS with bronze rigging screws.
Magic Dragons dimensions 40x14x5.6 feet(12m x 4.25m x 1.7m) - give her good form stability to carry sails at small angles of heel. With a low ballast to displacement ratio and her twin fin keels she has a gentle motion at sea. In a stiff breeze she is powerful to windward and fast down wind. She has no tendency to roll wildly in following seas. She has proven very tame and capable when weathering storms at sea. In light airs she can maintain her hull speed economically under power. As well as the wind vane self steering she has a Wood Freeman auto pilot and two Tiller Master auto pilots. She is tiller steered with the power assist of an extremely efficient trim tab. She can be steered by hand from anywhere in the cockpit with a power steering string that activates the trim tab.
Magic Dragons systems have been kept simple and practical. She has rain water collection and fresh and salt water pressure, an instant gas hot water heater, 150 gal (600 litre) GRP water tanks, a 25 gal (100 litre) polyethylene holding tank, manual and electric bilge pumps. No need to run the engine to keep her refrigeration going, it is thermostatic and automatic. All her water and fuel tanks are removable. She stands up firmly on her keels so she can be beached on a falling tide and she does not require a cradle for hard stand.
For the cooking range, the fridge/freezer and the hot water heater she carries two 40lb (18kg) LPG gas bottles.
The electrical systems include:
-24 volt engine starting with a 60 amp alternator, auto pilot, fuel transfer pump and diving compressor.
-12 volt house battery with solar panel, and three 60 amp alternators; one on the engine, one on the prop shaft to charge the battery under sail and one on a 6.5hp petrol generator.
Magic Dragon comes with:

The owners aged 78 and 81 are reluctantly contemplating a permanent landing so they are hoping to find younger people who would like a practical boat to carry on cruising in Magic Dragon. Or someone keen to have a boat in the South Pacific to escape the Northern winters.
